In this course we teach you how to create admin reports with React using a query builder. Admin reporting is a broad topic, and getting started can be overwhelming.

In five modules, we cover configuration of the query builder, setting up a server, displaying data in a grid, chart, and map, as well as some more advanced uses of the query builder. It's about three hours long and comes with code samples.

The course is taught by Jake Boone, who uses React Query Builder in real, mission-critical applications for a large engineering and construction firm.

In this course, we'll be using React Query Builder to create admin reports with complex filtering, bulk editing, data grids, charts, and maps.

# Server setup (part 2)

Now we will add data to the database and serve it with an API. We'll use a local database for testing, so be sure to have [PostgreSQL](https://www.postgresql.org/) [installed](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/tutorial-install.html) on your machine and [have a database created](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/tutorial-createdb.html).

## Adding data to the database

Once the database is created, create the `sales` table and insert the sample data by running the provided [`sales.sql`](http://localhost:3001/assets/protected/courses/building-advanced-admin-reporting-in-react/module_03/lesson_03.03/protected/src/sales.sql) file.

You can add data to the database using the [command line](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/13/app-psql.html) or by using a database client like [pgAdmin](https://www.pgadmin.org/).

The database connection string will be stored in an environment variable called `DATABASE_URL`, which Heroku has already set up for us on the remote server. We must do the same locally with a `.env` file in the root `myapp` directory. (The `dotenv` package allows us to do this.) We can also set up a `DEV_MODE` environment variable to distinguish between local and remote deployments within the code itself.

## Adding the API endpoint

Now we'll add the API endpoint. First we'll import a few more dependencies into `index.js`.

The `processSQL` function will take the parameterized output from the `formatQuery` function and prepare it for use by the `pg` package, namely converting the `?` bind variable placeholders to `$x`, where `x` is an integer, and preparing any date fields to be properly processed as dates. Create a file called `processSQL.js` in the `server` folder.
